Cradles have been used for years now in order to encourage babies to sleep. Most cradles have a kind of romantic, old fashioned feel to them and they really do brighten up any nursery. They come in a variety of different styles and that makes them ideal for all new parents no matter what their tastes are.

The Different Types of Cradles Available

As mentioned, there are different types of cradles available to purchase. Each has its own colour scheme and its own style. So, whether you want a cradle which looks traditional, or, if you would prefer something a little more modern, you should find something to suit your needs.

The first thing you should think about when choosing your cradle is the size. All cradles are different and you will need to find one which will easily fit your baby into it as well as having plenty of room to move around in. Generally one which is 18 inches by 36 inches should be sufficient.

Another thing to consider is how much weight the cradle holds. Obviously the more sturdy the cradle, the safer it will be. You simply do not want to risk the baby falling through the cradle so always choose one which is suitable for your baby’s weight both now and as they grow.

Many cradles have castors on and if possible you will need one which has lockable ones. This helps to make the cradle safer as it will not go rolling across the floor caused by the slightest movement. A cradle which does not have lockable castors could potentially be dangerous to the baby.

Another safety feature includes a locking pin which allows you to limit the movement of the actual cradle. This comes in handy when you have finished rocking the baby to sleep and you want to keep the cradle in the same position, allowing the baby to sleep peacefully.

There is even a cradle which converts into a loveseat for two toddlers to enjoy sitting on once they have outgrown the cradle. Obviously a cradle which converts into something else once the baby has outgrown it is better value for money. It will also look quite nice within the nursery and it comes in a variety of different colours.

Overall cradles really are a must have piece of baby furniture. They help to send even the grumpiest babies off to sleep and they also give your arms a rest! They look great in the nursery and they are designed to suit all tastes and budgets.
