Changing a baby is possibly the worst part of having a newborn in the house (apart from the late night/early morning crying!). Trying to find somewhere suitable to change them can often end in disaster, especially if you choose to do it on the sofa.

Surprisingly some new parents do not even think about purchasing a changing table for their nursery. However, it really would make life a lot simpler and it is a lot more hygienic too!

Changing tables come in extremely handy and they are also safer to use than your sofa. They allow you to have everything that you need close by and that is also safer for the baby as you will not be leaving them unattended for any period of time.

You can also get extras which fit around the changing table. For example, you could get a baby lotion dispenser which makes it easier to keep the babies bottom soft and rash free. You can also get drawers which go nearby to keep all of your changing essentials such as nappies and wipes in.

Generally a baby needs changing frequently and so a changing table is quite an important addition to the nursery. Obviously you will have to make sure that you have the right amount of space to keep the changing table in, but they do come in a range of sizes to suit most people’s space needs.

One thing to consider when choosing the right changing table is whether or not it comes with a changing mat. Now, you may not realise it but you do need a changing mat as well as the table. The table alone simply would not be comfortable enough so you need a mat to go with it. You can buy changing mats from most mothercare stores and some changing tables even come complete with one.

It is also possible to hang a mobile above the changing table to keep the baby busy. Often a baby will become restless throughout changing and that can make it difficult to fit a new nappy. However, with a mobile above the table the baby will be distracted and therefore changing will become a lot easier!
